Group Therapy
DBT Skills Group
This is a 10-week DBT skills group. The group will be held at the same day/time once a week for 10 classes. This group will be held onsite at our location, 690 Belmont Ave, W. Kitchener, Unit 303.
What is a DBT Skills Training Group?
Dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) was originally presented as an intervention for individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and since then has been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of mental health needs and concerns (e.g. anxiety, depression). This group will focus on the skills portion of DBT and will help folks develop a skills-based tool kit to allow for more adaptive coping and response behaviours. Dialectical behavioural therapy combines the principles of behavioural therapy with ancient Buddhist concepts of acceptance and mindfulness. In this group we will learn and practice skills in the following four areas: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance.
Who is this group for?
The DBT Skills Training group is for folks who are looking for support with emotion regulation, being more present, learning to manage intense emotions, and who want to improve relationships. This group centers around learning and practicing skills. This is a good fit for you if you are someone who is looking to develop a tool kit and increase your knowledge and awareness of what skills work best for you and when.
What is this group is about?
This group is a skills training only group. Traditionally DBT consists of individual counselling and 24/7 phone coaching. However, there is evidence that DBT skills training alone is an effective treatment for a variety of mental health challenges.
Skills will be taught by a Psychotherapist with extensive DBT experience and supported by a peer supporter (a person with lived experience using the skills). In order, modules covered will be Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation & Interpersonal Effectiveness. All participants will be provided with a DBT workbook with home practice and additional information about all of the skills taught. The skills will be taught as interactively as possible, with emphasis on real life application. Participants will be expected to engage in home practice and to take part in discussions.
